Dr.
B. Montgomery Pettitt, Hugh Roy and Lillie
Cranz Cullen Distinguished Professor of
Chemistry, discussed his work on DNA bulges
and recognition proteins Sept. 7 at the
226th annual American Chemical Society
national meeting in New York, N.Y.
Research
studies at University of Houston are shedding
light on the mechanisms our bodies use
to recognize and repair mistakes in our
genetic code, mistakes that, left unchecked,
could lead to cancer.

Computer
Science Professor’s Research Could
Improve Security Screening
Professor Ioannis Pavlidis
joined the department of Computer Science
in the spring, 2003. Dr. Pavlidis is a
pioneer in high-tech biometric lie detection.
In conjunction with Honeywell Laboratories
and the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Pavlidis and
his students are developing a lie detection
technique based on the human “fright-flight
response.” The premise is that the
same physiological response that occurs
when we are frightened can also signal
willful deception. The blushing occurring
around the eyes during fright-flight may
be detected with thermal imaging.

Department of Biology and Biochemistry,
will receive the Aschoff-Honma Prize
for 2003 at a ceremony to be held on
September 8 in Sapporo, Japan. This
international prize is given every other
year to a young scientist who has made
groundbreaking contributions in biological
rhythms research. It is considered the
top individual honor given to scientists
working in biological rhythms research.
Dr. Hardin will receive an award of
¥1,000,000 (approximately $10,000
US), and will give a special plenary
lecture at the Sapporo Symposium on
Biological Rhythms in Japan.

UH Professor Arnold Eskin First to Win
Both Farfel and Moores Awards
"You might say University of Houston
professor Arnold Eskin’s accomplishments
have come at a snail’s pace. And,
in his case, that doesn’t mean slowly.
A good deal of his acclaimed
research into biological clocks and the
learning process has been based on experiments
using Aplysia – a scientific term
for, that’s right, marine snails.
Eskin’s internationally
renowned scholarship in neuroscience,
along with his continuing contributions
as a teacher and efforts in establishing
and leading the Department of Biology
and Biochemistry, have earned him the
university’s highest honor for a
faculty member – the annual Esther
Farfel Award. Additionally, Eskin has
won a John & Rebecca Moores Scholars
Award."
