Career in Health Professions

If you are looking for guidance in preparing for a career in the health professions, this is a good place to start. The following links will direct you to sites either in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics or in other colleges at UH that offer preparatory programs.

Medicine and Dentistry
In the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, students will find routes to superb preparation for careers in the health professions. While students who hope to attend medical or dental school may choose to major in any department, most find that a major in biology and biochemistry best meets their needs. Qualified students may be eligible for the Joint Admission Medical Program. Also, see the Pre-Professional Post-Baccalaureate Studies Office.

Medical Technology
The Department of Biology and Biochemistry offers a biology-medical technology degree for those interested in this area. This program is referred to as a "3 and 1," which means students spend three years taking coursework on our campus in preparation to apply for the clinical program at one of our affiliates. If accepted into a clinical program, students spend one year taking specific courses and laboratory subjects training to be medical technologists and preparing for certification exams. The year in the clinical program is transferred back to UH and clinical credits complete degree requirements for a B.S. in biology with medical technology certification.

Medical Dosimetry
The UH Department of Physics and the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center`conduct a joint program in medical dosimetry. Medical dosimetry is the science of treatment design and dose application in the radiation treatment of patients with cancer. The demand in this field is currently strong.

Physical Therapy
Prerequisite coursework to prepare students for physical therapy programs are taken throughout the University of Houston with an emphasis on sciences. Nearly all programs require that students earn a baccalaureate degree and then earn their PT degree at the master's level. See the Pre-Professional Post-Baccalaureate Studies Office.

Dietetics
Prepare for a career as a registered dietitian by majoring in in the Department of Health and Human Performance in the College of Education.

Nursing
Pre-nursing courses are offered at UH and prepare students to transfer to the nursing program of their choice. Pre-nursing students typically major in social sciences, health, or remain University Studies students because of the nature of this field and their intent to remain at UH only two years. For more information see the Pre-Professional Post-Baccalaureate Studies Office.
